Perhaps San Francisco didn't need another El Faro...but like it or not, it got one in fall 2012 in El Balazo's former patchouli-damaged space in the Upper Haight. El Faro's interior decor seems remarkably similar to that of the previous tenant, but the real question isn't whether management will add breakfast items or bottled beer to the menu. It's whether they'll open the upstairs back patio for al fresco dining. Answer us, commissioner! There's also a restroom with a sliding door, alright. Credit cards accepted.

Sizable enough but floppier than that Guns 'N' Roses reunion LP, El Faro of the Haight's debut on our Mustache Chart was an inglorious affair...although it wasn't without a few scattered charms. But while its gutsy spiciness, smooth ingredient mix, and flavorful chicken were all impressive, this overly moist slab was defined in the end by a host of misgivings, from a grave paucity of vegetables to sub-profile, non-starting cheese. Plump rice was a winner; unasked-for whole pinto beans (surprise!) were not. Hrumph.
