Hold the FortJune 2010
Big-ass Hiatus!

Those of you bummed by our suddenly road-feverish panel's recent three-week disappearing act will be positively crestfallen by what's coming this May and June: seven weeks on leave from Burritotown, California. We'll miss the slabular trappings of home more than almost anything, but that doesn't mean we'll be desperately slumming it at Chipotle in Lincoln or Qdoba in Dubuque. Kindly hold the fort for us until late June.

June Taqueria Visits

6/30: New-ish Estrella Taq. on Haight kicks down a slab that's a firm seven-mustacher from the get-go.
6/28: La Corneta Taq. — the good one, in Glen Park — takes a moderate slide down our 10-Mustache Scale™.

May Taqueria Visits

5/5: It’s greasy fingertips, full-on bitchin’ carne asada, avocado slices galore, and mustaches mustaches mustaches at Taq. El Castillito on Golden Gate.
5/3: The days of eight-mustache regularity for us at El Tesoro on O’Farrell are a sad and distant memory.

April Taqueria Visits

4/30: Taq. La Alteña makes us a pork burrito that unwittingly presents a strong case for vegetarianism.
4/26: What was once Taq. Zapata and pretty damn lousy is now Zapata Mexican Grill and really quite good.
4/22: Looking for elegant rusticity in a burly carnitas burrito? Your quest ends at Taco Stop.
4/18: Taq. El Taco Loco has known some highs and lows the last few years. Our latest visit: not high.
4/15: Gamely playing down to the level of its limp-wristed Financial District competitors, Tlaloc Sabor Mexicano bypasses flirting with lameness and simply makes a straight pass at it.
4/11: Taq. Reina’s kitchen assembly line apparently thinks it’s OK to bypass the beans and salsa trays. Well, it’s never OK.
Burrito Is Best Food!March 2010
2010 Hiatus #1!

Now that we've written more burrito reviews in seven-plus seasons than Hank Aaron hit home runs in 23, it's time our hard-charging judges panel took a powder or two this year.

We'll be back at the San Francisco taqueria plate and swinging for the fences once again come mid April.

Recent Closures

Sometimes these things happen.

This time, it happens to La Salsa in Pacific Heights and La Carreta Taq. in the Lower Haight.

Do not fret, San Francisco burrito-eating community! Over 165 local taquerias remain in business, most of which are far better than La Carreta ever was.

March Taqueria Visits

3/16: La Mexicana's burritowork experiences a few serious issues amid its world of adequacy.
3/11: With 8.42 mustaches roaring under its hood, La Fonda’s muscular burritowork again comes a-rumblin' up our block.
3/6: It’s about time Taq. El Buen Sabor finally lives up to its promising name.
3/3: One and one makes two-point-something at Goza-Goza Taco, where our foiled lunch comprises more than the sum of its parts.
